Modelling spillover effects of a marine protected area in the Western Indian Ocean

چکیده

This study estimated the abundance gradient of fishes in waters surrounding a marine protected area (MPA) and used this information as evidence spillover from MPA. Fish landing data were collected trap fishermen over 12-month period Blue Bay Marine Park on west coast Mauritius Western Indian Ocean. Two indicators used: catch per trap, number fish trap. A Generalised Linear Model was to standardise by removing effects individual fishermen’s productivity measurements while negative-binomial distribution for fish. The found slight declining beyond MPA up distance 4 km. also established that individuals belonging key species caught near larger thanthose same more than km away. negative reinforces occurring

Reefs and islands of the Chagos Archipelago, Indian Ocean: why it is the world's largest no-take marine protected area.

The Chagos Archipelago was designated a no-take marine protected area (MPA) in 2010; it covers 550 000 km2, with more than 60 000 km2 shallow limestone platform and reefs. This has doubled the global cover of such MPAs.It contains 25-50% of the Indian Ocean reef area remaining in excellent condition, as well as the world's largest contiguous undamaged reef area. It has suffered from warming epi...

Stepwise strategic environmental management in marine protected area

In recent decades, necessity to protect environment has been a serious concern for all people and international communities. In appropriate development of human economic activities, subsistence dependence of the growing world population on nature decreases the natural diversity of ecosystems and habitats day by day and provides additional constraints for life and survival of wildlife. As a resu...

Towards A Network of Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs) in the Western Indian Ocean

In the Western Indian Ocean (WIO), local communities are increasingly assuming responsibility for inshore marine resources either on their own or through collaborative management arrangements with governments or non-state actors. In this paper, we trace the evolution and expansion of community management in the WIO and present the first ever inventory and assessment of the region's locally mana...

Using marine mammal habitat modelling to identify priority conservation zones within a marine protected area

One common approach to marine conservation is the designation of marine protected areas (MPAs). Marine mammals have been proposed as a target species for such areas due to their role as indicators of ecosystem processes. In NE Scotland, a large multiple-use MPA has been designated to protect bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus. We used broad-scale surveys throughout this MPA to model habitat...
